VMware supplier briefs

Microsoft (via IQ4hire)

Hyper-V · Azure Local · Azure

Microsoft can replace VMware in your own data center (Hyper-V or Azure Local) or in its cloud (Azure). IQ4hire procures Azure Local, Windows Server licensing and Azure as a Microsoft reseller (CSP).

IQ4hire can make mistakes. Supplier details change often — confirm anything important directly with the supplier before you decide.

Where Microsoft (via IQ4hire) fits

Strengths

  • Azure Local's per-core host fee and Windows Server subscription are waived for customers who exchange Windows Server Datacenter licenses with active Software Assurance, in hyperconverged deployments without external storage. [1]
  • Microsoft's Azure Migrate tool moves VMware virtual machines to Azure Local (Azure Local 2503 and later) without installing agents on the machines first. [2]
  • Hyper-V comes with Windows Server; many VMware estates already license Windows Server Datacenter on every host. IQ4hire view
  • One reseller relationship covers on-premises Microsoft licensing and Azure consumption. IQ4hire view

Fit constraints

  • The Azure Local fee waiver does not apply to deployments with a separate storage array or to disconnected deployments. [1]
  • Azure Local runs only on Microsoft-approved hardware — check current servers before assuming reuse. IQ4hire view
  • Azure VMware Solution keeps you on VMware: Microsoft no longer sells it with the VMware license included, and license-included pay-as-you-go nodes are supported unchanged only through October 31, 2026. [3]
  • Consolidating more infrastructure with one supplier reduces negotiating leverage — price an independent alternative alongside it. IQ4hire view

Best for

  • Windows-heavy estates that already license Windows Server Datacenter
  • Systems that must stay in a data center you control
  • Organizations already standardized on Microsoft 365 and Azure

Look elsewhere when

  • Most servers run Linux — compare Nutanix (Path 4A) or Proxmox (Path 3)
  • No Software Assurance and no plan to buy it — model full licensing cost first
  • The goal is to keep the VMware toolchain — compare Paths 1 and 2

Ask before you sign

  • Which of our current servers are on Microsoft's approved hardware list
  • What our Windows Server and SQL Server licenses are worth on Azure Local and in Azure
  • Total three-year cost vs. renewing VMware, including training
